#Winnipeg is jam-packed with talent, famously honed by 300+ days of winter spent in our basements creating. Here’s a few to watch.

At First Site / Short Filmmakers

Luc & Stephen get the light in Manitoba.

Lucas c Pauls / Artist + Designer

NASCAD-trained Lucas thinks with his eyeballs.

Lucas c Pauls - Lebeato Covers.

Ryan McMahon / Comedian

Ryan is Aboriginal, and that’s funny.

Infinite Ammo / Game Developer

This prototype-stage game needs to get it’s a$$ over to Kickstarter before I start throwing around the words “lush” and “dreamscape”.

BlinkWorks Media / Filmmakers

Lisanne & James spent the past several months zipping around the continent filming a (beautiful) documentary about video games. * cough * pretty cool * cough *

Here I am rocking my warm fuzzy 8 bit memories with these silver charms by magical Canadian jewelry designers Frug.

Geek gifts that really, um, stick.

App magnets! Totally unlicensed by Apple! Packaging that looks like a ginormous iPhone! Nerdy fridge!

The fridge decor of geeks.

Btw, WordPress feels “iPhone” is misspelled, but “ginormous” is good to go.

Sunday street art inspiration: pigeon.

Spotted in the alley behind the 100 block of Osborne. I’ve been watching a lot of Sesame Street lately, and hanging out with Bert has me especially attuned to pigeons.

An acute awareness of advertising gives me xray vision.

In a moment of ominous clarity, I saw through the Matrix yesterday while unlocking my Superstore cart. Disguised as a simple ad for pharmacy services, the Overlord’s PR department quietly assured me domestic duties aren’t that bad.

You like shopping. You do.

In case you don’t know what the bleep I’m referring to, may I suggest Follow Fridaying yourself a copy* of John Carpenter’s Shep Fairey-inspiring flick They Live? If the early-80′s wakka wakka soundtrack doesn’t get you, your newfound sensitivity to consumerist messages will.

They live, you obey.

They live, you consume their media channels.

*Semantic note: Is a movie still “a copy” if it’s a digital file? Isn’t it just…the movie?

EQ3 Plus launches midcentury modern design in Winnipeg

Posted: November 19th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Visual, Art & Design, Winnipeg | Tags: , , , , | 6 Comments »

EQ3 Plus is “a partnership between EQ3 and a growing list of iconic brands, including Herman Miller, Alessi, Stelton, Vitra, Pablo and Design House Stockholm”.

In the face of an impending Ikea rock-bottom prices invasion, EQ3 is repositioning upmarket, à la Le Château in the mid-2000′s.

We checked out the Thursday night launch party, replete with sushi, wine, dj, and 10% off for designers (aw!). Here’s a look at the midcentury classics now available in the Peg.

The Panton junior chair would make an adorable holiday gift for the stylish toddler in your life (in lime, please, Grandma), and is appropriately priced at $130 (I know from coveting it on the internet).

Design trend: crafty cross-stitch.

Posted: November 11th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Advertising, Branding & Retail, Visual, Art & Design | Tags: , , , , | 3 Comments »

Trend: a cross-stitchy craft kind of thing. Drawn-on-your-binder-with-a-Bic-in-grade-7 fonts have become ubiquitous, and the man-vs-machine tech-softening hand-crafted aesthetic needs to evolve.

You can tell it’s a style trend as opposed to a comment on the zeitgeist because it makes virtually no sense in every context presented below. (If someone understands the MTS ones, please comment. Are they Xmas tea towels?)

Prediction: when cable-knit backgrounds peter out, we will see a resurgence of Neuropol and rave flyers.
